Japan registers a new aftershock of 4.9 after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that left more than 60 dead

MADRID, 3 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Japan has recorded a new aftershock of magnitude 4.9 in the Ishikawa prefecture, located on the western coast, just two days after an earthquake claimed the lives of more than 60 people and caused extensive damage to buildings.

This new tremor occurred this Wednesday around 10:54 a.m. (2:54 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) at a depth of about twelve kilometers, without any tsunami warning having been activated. Since New Year's Day, when the earthquake occurred, there have been 448 earthquakes, as reported by the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

The agency has indicated that seismic activity continues in Ishiwaka prefecture, where there is a greater risk of house collapses and landslides, so it has asked the population to pay attention to future tremors and inclement weather.

Japanese authorities continue their search and rescue efforts for missing people and have so far confirmed the deaths of 64 people, most of them in the cities of Wajima and Suzu. In addition, there are a total of 300 people injured in the aforementioned prefecture, of which about 22 are in serious condition.

The earthquake had its epicenter about 30 kilometers northwest of Wajima and a depth of 16 kilometers, triggering an unusual major tsunami warning, although by Tuesday morning all warnings had been lifted. However, the Japanese Meteorological Agency encouraged people in affected areas to refrain from approaching the sea.
