IU asks Podemos for "responsibility" in the face of "essential measures" and believes that the Government must "extend democracy"

It faces its Federal Assembly with the objective of "reinforcing IU to strengthen spaces of convergence"

MADRID, 28 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Federal Coordinator of Izquierda Unida has asked Podemos for "responsibility" in the face of upcoming "essential measures" for the population and has appealed to the Government to "extend democracy" that "has not yet reached" to "some State and business apparatuses" .

This is stated by IU in the Political Report, in which it has not directly mentioned the purple formation, which it approved this Sunday in an online meeting that concluded with the approval of the document with 100 votes in favor (79%), 4 votes against (3%) and 22 abstentions (18%).

The document has been presented by the federal head of Strategy and Political Development, Ángel de la Cruz, who has called on the progressive and plurinational bloc to "act in coherence with the extraordinary mobilization effort made by progressive citizens in the elections of 23 July against any possible setback".

In this sense, he has stated that IU regrets the rejection of "a decree that was positive for unemployed people, who are the most vulnerable", in reference to the vote against the Podemos deputies to the royal decree-law that reformed unemployment benefit, which led to the fall of the measure.

"More measures will come and we ask that responsibility always prevail in each debate of these essential measures," he demanded in this regard.

Likewise, he has indicated that for IU the coalition government "has the historic task of extending democracy" and taking it to spaces where "it has not yet reached, such as some State and business apparatuses, and some strategic sectors of the economy." ".

De la Cruz has pointed out, in this context, that "more labor rights must be achieved, Public Health must be strengthened, the most vulnerable sectors must be protected and the challenges of youth and children must be converted into challenges for the country and the State. These are some of the challenges facing the coalition government".

Faced with the "historical crossroads" that we are experiencing", he has warned that "the right is betting on competition due to scarcity among those at the bottom", an aspect in which he has criticized that the PP "tries to take advantage of the water scarcity to confront some territories with another" and in which he has called for the fight against the climate crisis.

On the other hand, he highlighted that the approved report is committed to "contributing at a political and organizational level" so that Sumar advances "towards a broad space, with effective democratic mechanisms, where organizations participate in a democratic manner from the guarantee of recognition and representativeness." ".

"Izquierda Unida is an organization with experience, serious and solvent. The joint space of the transformative left will be in the medium and long term what we are and do as Izquierda Unida," De la Cruz stated in relation to the document.

In this context, he stressed that the formation faces its next Federal Assembly "with the learnings of a very intense political cycle" that "reaffirms the need" to "reinforce IU to strengthen spaces for convergence."

Looking ahead to the aforementioned Federal Assembly, the federal coordinator.

In this sense, De la Cruz has asserted that the objective is "to make Izquierda Unida the most useful instrument that people who want to fight to live better, people who do not want to go back but are not satisfied with what there is, can equip themselves." .

On the other hand, the document approved by IU points to a "very difficult" political situation in an international context in which "the reaction against democracy and Human Rights is advancing", an area in which the training includes the case of Israel. as the most "sinister".

Thus, it points to the Israeli Government as responsible for the "murder of more than 25,000 Palestinians, more than 200 people murdered every day, about half of them children and about 30% women."

IU considers, in this sense, that "there will be no justice until Netanyahu sits in court accused of genocide and crimes against humanity", and has stressed that "the world needs peace, cooperation and the most scrupulous respect." to international law". For this reason, De la Cruz has highlighted IU's opposition "to any type of military operation that could fuel the war in Yemen."

Finally, he stressed that IU is committed to "a Europe that is more supportive, more internationalist and that in international and geopolitical conflicts stands firmly on the side of Human Rights and democracy."

"This is what we are at stake in the European Elections in June," he warned, to also warn of the advance of the extreme right and the intention of the European PP to "reach an alliance" with it, for which he has called on the left to "rise to the challenge".

"There is no room for parliamentary shortcuts or for opportunistic temptations of any kind. What is at stake is too important to impose partisan interests over the rights of the working class," he declared.
