France mobilizes 2,000 agents on the outskirts of Paris after a night of riots with 31 detainees

"Nothing justifies the death of a young man," says Macron after the controversy over a police intervention

The Government will deploy some 2,000 police officers and gendarmes in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre after a night of violence that has resulted in 31 arrests, as a result of a 17-year-old teenager being shot to death on Tuesday by a member of the security forces. safety during a traffic control.

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has appeared before the media to announce an exceptional device "to maintain public order", in a message in which he has appealed for calm and to wait for the results of the "judicial truth", which he expects arrive "as quickly as possible".

Also the president, Emmanuel Macron, has called for calm from Marseille, echoing "the emotion of the entire nation". For Macron, the death of the teenager, identified as Naël, "is inexplicable, inexcusable", and he has stressed that "nothing justifies the death of a young man", for which he is confident that Justice can continue with its work smoothly.

The events took place at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, when a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest at a police checkpoint, after his vehicle was intercepted. At first, the Police reported an attempted hit-and-run, but a video has denied this version and an agent remains in custody for his alleged responsibility in a crime of homicide, according to the Nanterre Prosecutor's Office.

The night of protests has resulted in 24 police officers injured and some 40 vehicles set on fire and the authorities fear that new disturbances will take place. Other incidents, although of a lower level than those in Nanterre, have also been reported in other areas of the Paris metropolitan region, according to Franceinfo.

The mayor of Nanterre, Patrick Jarry, asked this afternoon that "the circumstances of the tragedy be clarified as soon as possible", asking the population for "calm". The City Council has made available to the Police the images captured by the video surveillance cameras of the scene.

Jarry, who has transferred his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased, has appealed "to each and every one of them for restraint and dignity, despite the legitimate emotion that this tragedy arouses."

MARCH ON THURSDAY

Naël's mother has announced on social networks the call for a "white march" on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Nanterre, in front of the Prefecture headquarters; a "revolt" in memory of her deceased son.

The family's lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, has assured that it is an "extremely serious" event, since the video released in the last few hours shows that "a policeman killed a young man in cold blood" and "there is no legitimate defense possible", reports 'Le Figaro'.
