Former Iran captain Ali Daei criticizes his family being prevented from flying abroad

MADRID, 27 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The former captain of the Iranian soccer team Ali Daei has strongly criticized the authorities on Tuesday after his family was prevented from traveling abroad on Monday, after his statements in support of the anti-government demonstrations that are taking place in the country since September following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

Daei has indicated that the airport authorities "did not provide answers" on the reasons why they were prevented from leaving the country. "What is the reason? Did they want to arrest terrorists?" He asked himself, before insisting that his wife was not planning to travel to the United States, according to the radio station Radio Farda.

According to official Iranian media, Daei's wife is subject to a foreign travel ban for "participating in riots" and "calling a strike", which is why she was prevented from traveling to Dubai. Likewise, these media stressed that the objective of the woman was to travel to the North American country.

Both Daei's wife and daughter came to board the flight, which however was diverted to make a stop on the Iranian island of Kish, where they had to get off. "What is the objective? It was a short trip and they wanted to return next week," argued the former soccer player, as reported by the German news agency DPA.

The former Iranian player has shown solidarity with protesters in the past, prompting authorities to temporarily confiscate his passport. Iranian authorities have so far executed two people convicted for their role in the mobilizations, while several thousand have been detained.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard recently confirmed that more than 300 people have died since the start of the protests, which was the first official balance since the start of the mobilizations over the death of Amini, a member of the Iranian Kurdish minority and detained for allegedly misplaced the veil. The figure is lower than that provided by the NGO Iran Human Rights, which points to more than 400 deaths due to the repression by the security forces.
