Fifteen complaints and eleven arrested for sexual assaults during the San Fermín festivities

PAMPLONA, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

So far from the San Fermín festivities, fifteen complaints have been registered and eleven people have been arrested for the commission of alleged sexual assaults, of different degrees. In this period, an increase in thefts has also been detected, especially of mobile phones, representing 80% of the total complaints registered during the Sanfermines, 988 out of 1,200.

From July 6 to 9, according to data from the Foral Police, 27% more crimes have been reported and arrests have increased by 100%.

This was reported to the media by the First Vice President and Minister of the Presidency, Equality, Public Function and Interior of the Government of Navarra, Javier Remírez, who visited the SOS Navarra Room this Monday, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Santos Induráin , which coordinates the health and safety device during the San Fermín festivities, to take stock of the first days of the festivities.

Remírez has stated that "any act of sexual assault, any minimal macho expression, must be deeply condemned, as it is by the Government of Navarra and all administrations."

The most serious case, he explained, occurred last Saturday with a man arrested for an alleged sexual assault on a woman in a house who, after appearing before the judicial authority, was released with a restraining order. This Monday, at 9:00 p.m., a protest rally has been called in the Plaza del Castillo.

Asked about the delay in the courts handing down a sentence on these complaints, Javier Remírez has indicated that "the courts, specifically the duty court of Pamplona is working absolutely piecemeal and intensely for it." He also recalled that on January 1 Navarra will have a new gender violence court.

Another event, also serious, has been the attack on a young man in the Media Luna park by some unknown persons who have stabbed several times. In this sense, the vice president stressed that all police forces, especially the National Police, which is conducting the investigation, are working to "arrest those responsible." And he has assured that the perpetrators of the aggression "will be arrested, they will be brought to justice and, of course, we are not going to allow any type of aggression of these characteristics that endangers the lives of people."

Javier Remírez has also regretted the attack on Red Cross professionals and health professionals, to whom he has shown his solidarity while asking the public "to respect these professionals who, along with others, are sacrificing themselves so that the rest of the citizenry let's enjoy the festivities"

Remírez has indicated that "they are being parties, in general, with a great atmosphere and harmony", characterized by a "notable increase in the influx of people" between July 6 and 9 compared to the same period last year. In fact, there has been a 30% increase in the buses that have come to Pamplona for the festivities and, also, "a record" has been broken in terms of waste collection.

Calls to 112 have also increased during this period so that, in the first four days of San Fermín, 11,000 calls related to the festival have been answered and around 3,000 calls over the weekend.

In this regard, Remírez has indicated that "unfortunately there is a greater number of thefts compared to last year's data, especially mobile phones." Specifically, theft complaints represent 80% of all complaints, 988 of the 1,200 complaints collected so far this holiday season. As a positive point, she has highlighted that "many terminals are recovering thanks to complaints from the public."

A total of 36 people have been arrested on suspicion of participating in mobile phone thefts and the different police are already contacting the people who have denounced so that they can detect if any of the recovered terminals is theirs.
