FCC is awarded the construction of the Pallas reactor for the treatment of cancer and other diseases

FCC Construction has been the company chosen by Pallas for the construction of the Pallas reactor, which allows many patients who have cancer and cardiovascular diseases to be treated and diagnosed, as reported by the company this Thursday in a press release.

These patients depend on the medical isotopes produced at Petten, the former high-flux reactor. With the construction of the new reactor "it will be possible to help patients again for a long time", while at the same time contributing to research into a carbon dioxide-free energy supply.

The firm has highlighted that from this moment on, the necessary engineering will be developed to begin construction of the reactor.

NRG/Pallas CEO Bertholt Leeftink explained that "the new reactor benefits the security of the supply of medical isotopes for patients around the world and is important for maintaining the Dutch nuclear knowledge infrastructure."

For his part, the Western European director of FCC Construction, Yago Mijangos, has assured that, for FCC Construction, participation in the Pallas project is "without a doubt an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate the firm's experience and capacity in the design and execution of industrial infrastructures, which have a high degree of specialization, innovation and technology".

In January 2023, Pallas launched a tender procedure for the construction of the reactor and surrounding buildings under European Union (EU) public procurement rules.

Thus, three pre-qualified candidates submitted an offer and FCC Construction's was valued as the "best technically and economically."
