Erdogan acknowledges his party's defeat in Turkish municipal elections and promises to right wrongs

MADRID, 1 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, recognized this Sunday the defeat of his formation, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), according to the still partial official results of the local elections held this Sunday.

After this, the Turkish president has assured that the members of the party will discuss the debacle to "identify the reasons" and "correct errors" in view of the next elections.

"Although it has not yet been finalized, the results of the polls show us that we are experiencing a loss throughout our country. Of course, we will also discuss the reasons for this decline at the local level. We will identify the reasons very well and make the necessary interventions there where we lose or fall behind," Erdogan said, according to the Turkish news agency Anatolia.

In that sense, he has promised "not to disrespect the nation's decision under any circumstances", explaining that during this legislative period "they will correct the errors" and "deficiencies", in addition to increasing "the number of virtues". Furthermore, he thanked Turkish citizens for "their common sense" in demonstrating the "maturity" of the country's democracy.

"The fact that the nation's decision is expressed at the polls without facing any pressure, imposition or guidance is a great gain for our democracy. (...) Regardless of the results, the winner of these elections is above all our democracy, (as well as) the national will and the 85 million people, regardless of their political opinions," added the Turkish president.

Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has claimed a "historic" victory after beating Erdogan's AKP in the country's main cities.

With 99.37 percent of the ballot boxes already processed, the CHP has achieved 37.71 percent support in the overall results of the elections, compared to 35.53 percent for the AKP, and would clearly prevail in the main elections. cities in the country such as Istanbul, Ankara or Izmir.
