Equality defends the new director of the Women's Institute from criticism from Sumar and trans groups

MADRID, 29 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Ministry of Equality has defended the new director of the Women's Institute, Isabel García, after criticism from Sumar and trans groups. Thus, sources from this department have indicated to Europa Press that García is supported by her resume, both in private companies and in the public sphere, as a public servant, in the defense of the rights of LGTBI people.

In this sense, Equality points out that García's professional career, both in the private sphere and in public institutions, "has always been related to team management and the achievement of objectives linked to equality policies, paying special attention to the areas of sports, youth and equal opportunities between men and women, as well as the fight against gender violence".

Thus, they remember that in 2015 she was appointed deputy for Equality, Youth and Sports of the Valencia Provincial Council, a position she held simultaneously with that of Councilor for Equality and Commerce of the Xirivella City Council (Valencia) until July 2019, among other positions, while who as a deputy created the Network of Municipalities against gender violence in the province of Valencia, awarded by the Ministry of Equality in 2022 and the Valencia Feminario, a space for national feminist debate, as well as the International Congress of Women and Sports .

He has received multiple recognitions for his work, among others, the Va de Dona Award from the Valencian Pilota Federation 2022; the 2019 Bronze Medal and Badge for Sports Merit in the Personalities category of the Spanish Handball Federation; the Meninas 2018 Prize, awarded by the Government Delegation in the Valencian Community for the fight against sexist violence; and the 2016 Dones Progressistes Award, awarded by the Federation of Dones Progressistes of the Valencian Community.

Precisely, this Thursday the Trans Platform Federation and Euphoria Trans-Allied Families asked the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, to revoke García's appointment and, in her place, put in charge "a woman who defends all women , also the trans ones".

In this sense, they denounced that García "has maintained openly transphobic and anti-trans rights speeches during the processing of the Trans Law" and indicated that "the cuts in trans rights carried out by Ayuso, with the repeal of fundamental aspects of the trans laws and LGTBI of the Community of Madrid and the arguments put forward for this, are within the same ideological frameworks that Isabel García defends."

The trans groups were joined by Sumar's spokesperson on feminism, equality and LGTBI rights and freedoms, Elizabeth Duval, who described the appointment of Isabel García as head of the Women's Institute as "shameful."

"This appointment of the Ministry of Equality is shameful and sends a regrettable message. The Women's Institute cannot be directed by someone who supports the conspiracy of the erasure of women and criticizes the queer dictatorship," Duval, who forms part of the provisional leadership of Sumar until the holding of its assembly.

For their part, Sumar described the appointment as "disappointing" because, in their opinion, the direction of the Women's Institute "cannot be in the hands of someone who belittles and insults women and LGTBI people." "Freedom belongs to everyone, everyone, or it belongs to no one," claimed Yolanda Díaz's party in X.

The MEP and leader of Sumar María Eugenia Rodríguez Palop also took the same line, asking the Government to reverse the appointment. "The director of the Women's Institute cannot be a transphobe or support the delusional positions that we have suffered in these years. Transphobia does not represent us. It does not do justice to feminism, it divides and confronts, excludes and denigrates," she denounced.

Also the spokesperson for Más Madrid in the Madrid Assembly, Manuela Bergerot, questioned the appointment of the new director of the Women's Institute, a "bad decision" that worries them.

"The Ministry of Equality must continue to delve deeper into LGTBI and Trans rights. Even more so now, when governments like Madrid are cutting them," Mónica García's successor transferred through the social network 'X' (formerly Twitter) .

The senator from Más Madrid and trans activist, Carla Antonelli, also criticized the election of Isabel García, who has "vexed" the group, at the head of this department assigned to Equality, along with the label '

"The Women's Institute should be for each and every one of the women and this woman has pointed out to us trans women, harassed and insulted: 'Queer dictatorship / Trans lobby' / 'You continue to spew hate just like queers do' / 'Pure queer delirium' / 'Queer theory aims to perpetuate patriarchy,' he lamented.
