BERLIN (GERMANY), Nov. 1 (STATS Perform/dpa/EP) -

Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne will be a reserve and test driver for the Aston Martin team next season, sharing duties with Formula 2 champion Felipe Drugovich, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Formula E champion will carry out, according to the team, "an intensive simulation and development program at the team's factory in Silverstone" as a first step. In addition, his new role at Aston Martin will not prevent him from participating in the new season of the World Championship for electric single-seaters, in which he will race for the DS Penske team in the 2022-2023 campaign.

Vandoorne, 30, dominated GP2, winning 11 races and winning the 2015 title, entered 41 Grands Prix between 2016 and 2018 and, in three Formula E seasons, won three races and became world champion in 2021. -2022.

"It's incredibly exciting to take on the role of reserve driver in Formula 1 and I'm delighted to be doing it with Aston Martin," said Vandoorne.

The Belgian celebrated sharing a team with the Spaniard Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll next season, "to help them develop and improve next year's car". "I am looking forward to accepting the challenge, and the reward, of working together with the entire organization at Silverstone," added the Belgian, whose new position leaves the future of Nico Hülkenberg, the current Aston Martin reserve driver, who has already been linked to Haas.
