Audi wants to be "fighting for victories" in Formula 1 from 2028

NEUBURG AN DER DONAU (ALEMANIA), 28 Dic. (dpa/EP) -

The head of the Audi project in Formula 1, Adam Baker, set himself the goal to be "fighting for victories" his third year in the competition, that is, 2028, although he acknowledged that "the first and second years can be hard ", being "realistic".

"We have signed for the period between 2026 and 2030. We want to be in a position to be able to fight for victories after three years," Baker told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

However, from Audi they are aware that the expectations with their project in the 'Great Circus' are great and the "external pressure is palpable" and "expected". "We know the magnitude of the challenge. We can already foresee what we have to achieve to be successful in 2026. That's why the pressure we put on ourselves internally at Audi is just as great," he added.

"You have to be realistic. The first and second years can also be tough. However, it is very difficult to predict," said Baker, who is confident that the new technical regulations that will apply in 2026 will make his entry more pleasant. "That opens up more opportunities to be competitive more quickly as a newcomer. The way to do that is by regulating costs," he explained.

With this new regulation, on the path of sustainability, the deployment of electrical energy is increased by up to 50 percent and a 100 percent sustainable fuel will be used. A reduction in general costs is added, with a limit set at 95 million until 2025 and up to 130 by 2026. "Everyone has the same possibilities, everyone must face the same challenge by 2026. And the challenge will be as enormous as ever It's been in Formula 1," Baker said.

"If you do a good job, there is a chance to be ahead in 2026," said the head of the project. Audi will compete as a factory team in Formula 1 from 2026. The Volkswagen subsidiary is developing the engine in Neuburg an der Donau, while the chassis is being built by the experienced traditional Swiss team Sauber, a team with which they will compete in Formula 1.
