As reported by the chief secretary of Odisha, Pradeep Jena, the latest balance available to the authorities places the number of deaths between 55 and 60, although he has recognized that this balance may increase, according to the newspaper 'Hindustan Times'.

The Coromandel express, which was covering the route from Kolkata to Chennai, ended up crashing into the derailed carriages of another railway that was going from Bengaluru to Kolkata, said the spokesman for the Ministry of Railways, Amitabh Sharma.

At the moment, more than a hundred personnel of the National Disaster Relief and Relief Force (NDRF) have already arrived at the derailment zone, around the town of Balasore, to search for trapped passengers.

The chief minister of the neighboring state of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has confirmed on her Twitter account that the authorities are already monitoring the situation, in the absence of precise information on the condition of the injured.

In fact, the Indian Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has reported that he will travel to Odisha to see first-hand the situation after the tragic accident. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will also be present.

The Indian authorities have announced a series of compensation of up to 200,000 rupees (more than 2,250 euros) for the relatives of the victims, and up to 50,000 rupees (more than 560 euros) for the injured, the NDTV television network collects.

After learning the news, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has transferred his regret for the accident, and has sent a message of encouragement to the families of the victims. "Rescue operations are being carried out at the scene of the accident," he said on his official Twitter profile.

For her part, the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, has joined the condolences of Prime Minister Modi. "My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of the rescue operations and the speedy recovery of the injured," said the Indian head of state.
