The Moroccan investment fund Al Mada, whose main shareholder is King Mohamed VI, has announced a donation of one billion dirhams (around €91.4 million) to support reconstruction efforts after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake on the open Richter scale that shook the country last week, leaving nearly 3,000 dead.

"At the proposal of its main shareholder, His Majesty King Mohamed VI, the Board of Directors of Al Mada has decided to make a financial contribution to the special fund for managing the effects of the earthquake that shook Morocco in the form of one billion dirhams. "said Al Mada.

Thus, he specified that "this donation will be delivered to the special account created under royal instruction on September 11 to receive solidarity initiatives after this unprecedented natural catastrophe," according to a statement published by the investment fund, as reported by the newspaper. For its part, Bank Al Maghrib has also announced a donation of one billion dirhams to this special fund "to participate in the spirit of national solidarity", as stated in a brief statement published by the entity through its website. Web.

The announcements came after Mohamed VI chaired a working meeting on Thursday at the Royal Palace to activate the emergency program for the relocation of victims of the earthquake, which had its epicenter in the province of Al Haouz, in the region. of the High Atlas.

The program consists of both the urgent temporary relocation of those affected and the granting of emergency aid of up to 30,000 dirhams (more than 2,700 euros) to affected families. The Alawite monarch has stressed the extremely urgent nature of these measures.

In the face of the tragedy, the international community has offered humanitarian aid, although Rabat has only accepted aid from a few countries, including Spain. Mohamed VI, for his part, has been absent during the first days after the event. On Tuesday he appeared for the first time in public during a visit to a Marrakech hospital where hundreds of wounded people are recovering.
