Alberto Bettiol wins the prologue and leads the Tour Down Under

MADRID, 17 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Italian cyclist Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) won the prologue stage of the Tour Down Under on Tuesday, held in Adelaide over 5.5 kilometers, and is the first leader of the Australian race, which in turn opens the 2023 calendar of the UCI WorldTour --highest category of cycling--.

Bettiol was one of the few who could cover the 5.5 kilometers of Adelaide's urban layout in the dry. The Italian, also a time trial specialist, beat the American Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) by 8 seconds and the Dane Julius Johansen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) by 10 seconds.

The day, passed through water for the majority of cyclists, prevented them from seeing more duels against a Bettiol who spent hours waiting on the throne of provisional leader until he was able to celebrate, after the last rider reached the finish line, his first victory of the year, in the first race of the year.

The young cyclist from Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana (Barcelona) Marc Brustenga (Trek-Segafredo) stood out, eighteenth in this rapid prologue 18 seconds from Bettiol, with Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) 25th, 20 seconds away, being the second best Spanish .

The first online stage of this inaugural test of the elite calendar will be 149.9 kilometers, starting and ending in Tanunda. Stage with a circuit that includes the 4th category level Menglers Hill (492 meters, with 4.5 kilometers at 3.7 percent gradient) and that will put Bettiol's leadership in doubt.
