MADRID, 1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Almost a thousand people have been arrested this morning in the streets of France awaiting the funeral, this Saturday in the city of Nanterre, of the young Nahel M., whose death last Tuesday at the hands of the Police triggered the most violent protests in recent years in the country.

The latest balance of the French authorities puts the detainees at 994 during this morning, to which are added 79 injured policemen and gendarmes, as the Ministry has announced on its Twitter account.

Despite the decrease in violence, the Ministry has verified around 1,350 vehicles and 234 buildings burned or damaged, as well as another 2,560 fires on public roads. In total, 45,000 police and gendarmes had been mobilized.

"The republic will win, not the rioters," declared the Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, on a visit to Mantes-la-Jolie (Yvelines) this morning. Although Darmanin has indicated that the violence in Paris has decreased in recent hours, he has acknowledged that the situation in Marseille and Lyon continues to be "unacceptable".

"The Home Office is ready to further increase its position of strength if things ever deteriorate, which is not the case tonight," added the minister, who remained cautious about the possibility of decreeing a state of lockdown. emergency, a device that "has been called four times in sixty years", and has mentioned that in 2005, during previous popular riots, the device had been deployed on the tenth day.

In fact, the secretary of the Bouches-du-Rhône Police union, Rudy Manna, has described "guerrilla scenes" in Marseille, a city where "the results of the night can be summed up in one word: apocalyptic". In this city a group of 30 young people has assaulted an armory where they have stolen several hunting rifles, but according to police sources without ammunition.
