A 4.6 magnitude aftershock shakes ground zero of the earthquake in Morocco as the death toll rises to 3,000

MADRID, 14 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The earth shook again this Thursday morning in the central area of Morocco, with an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale, after some 3,000 people lost their lives due to an earthquake of 6.8 registered last year. Friday.

The last major aftershock took place around 7:00 a.m. (local time) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) places the origin of the earthquake at a depth of 9.7 kilometers, which would contribute to it also being felt on the surface.

This is one of the most powerful aftershocks since Friday's earthquake, although the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM) had also recorded two of magnitude 3.5 that occurred on Wednesday.

The USGS estimates that one in every 20 earthquakes like the one in Morocco results in a similar or even greater aftershock in the following week, although sources from this center consulted by Europa Press have pointed out that the probability of this decreasing over time.

The most frequent scenario, to which the USGS grants a probability of 98 percent, involves a progressive reduction in both the number and magnitude of aftershocks, so that only moderate movements are contemplated that, in some cases, can affect to already weakened structures on the surface.

Another scenario, which is around 2 percent in terms of probability, does foresee one or more aftershocks of magnitude greater than 6, while there would be less than 1 percent chance that Morocco would suffer an earthquake in the short term that exceeds earthquake levels. occurred on September 8. If necessary, this second earthquake would itself lead to its own sequence of aftershocks.
