The Socialists highlight their defense of the co-official languages ??in full debate on their use in the Cortes
The PSOE will propose the former head of the Executive of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, for the Presidency of the Congress of Deputies during the XV Legislature, which will be elected this Thursday, August 17, coinciding with the Constitution of the Cortes after the general elections last month of July.
As announced by the PSOE in a press release, Armengol is the one chosen by the formation to occupy the position left by Meritxell Batet. The Federal Executive Commission of the party, which will meet tomorrow, will make this proposal to the Socialist Parliamentary Group in Congress.
And then it will be on Thursday, August 17, when Armengol will have to submit to a vote in Congress to be elected as its next president, in a vote in which she will have to get a majority to occupy this position.
To do this, the Socialists have to get the affirmative vote of parties such as ERC, Bildu, PNV or Junts, among others, in addition to their Sumar partners. Some of these formations were betting on a progressive Congress Table that would be chaired by the Socialists, even without knowing the name, while Junts will decide its position at a meeting of its executive on Thursday.
For his part, the deputy-elect of Sumar-En Comú Podem Gerardo Pisarello has already shown himself in favor of Armengol being the next president of Congress, even before it was confirmed by the Socialists.
Francina Armengol got her seat for Congress in the 23J elections after the Government of the Balearic Islands lost in the regional elections on May 28, where the PP took control of the baton.
She became president of the Balearic Islands in 2015, a position that she revalidated in 2019. In this last legislature, she shared the Government with Podemos and Més, parties that have now joined the Sumar coalition.
As detailed by the PSOE, Francina Armengol has been a member of the territorial federation of the party in the Balearic Islands since the 1990s and has “extensive experience and service in public and parliamentary life.” In the beginning, she was a councilor in the Inca town hall, later a deputy in Parliament, a counselor in the Mallorca Island Council, a deputy in Congress and then regional president.
THE CO-OFFICIAL LANGUAGES
In the press release issued by the PSOE, the Socialists define Armengol as “a policy close to the daily reality of citizens, which represents the fight for women’s equality, social justice and the commitment to coexistence based on the dialogue.
“Armengol is also an example of a country that lives naturally in the wealth of the various languages ??spoken in Spain, as well as a leader committed to the ecological transition,” they highlight.
Precisely, the use of co-official languages ??in Congress has been one of the demands made by Sumar, in addition to other pro-independence formations.
