The last weeks of the year are a key time to look back and take stock. Europa Press photographers, deployed around the world, have had to cover several elections, sporting events such as the Women’s Soccer World Cup and the war in Gaza, among other news. These have been the images chosen by the agency’s photo team to summarize 2023.

Relations between Spain and Morocco began the year making headlines. After controversies surrounding immigration, the Sahrawi people and Pegasus, both governments held a summit in Rabat, the first High Level Meeting in eight years. This image shows the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; to the historian of the Kingdom of Morocco and spokesman for the Royal Palace, Abdelhak Lamrin and the Minister of Health and Social Protection of Rabat, Khalid Ait Taleb, after visiting the Mausoleum of Mohamed V, where Sánchez went to make a floral offering and sign in the Golden Book.

Popular festivals leave impressive images every year. A good example of this is this photo of the Teruel Lovers’ Festival, held in February, which turned the capital of Teruel into a stage taken from the 13th century for the representation of the tragic love story.

One of the many political news that has marked the news this year has been the resignation of María Gámez as general director of the Civil Guard. Gámez presented her resignation to the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, after her husband was summoned as part of a judicial procedure.

April has arrived, and with it Easter. This photo shows the third Duke of Alba II of the Legion, based in Ceuta, transferring the Christ of the Good Death and Animas to his processional throne on Holy Thursday. The procession in Malaga (Andalusia) of the Cristo de Mena or Cristo de los Legionarios is one of the best known in all of Spain.

On May 28, the local and regional elections were held, the first electoral event after the rise of Alberto Núñez Feijóo to the leadership of the PP. The elections opened the door to changes of government in favor of the popular ones in several cities and autonomies, as well as absolute majorities such as those of Isabel Díaz Ayuso in the Community of Madrid and José Luis Martínez Almeida, in the mayor’s office of the capital.

This photograph shows thousands of applicants who dressed in black in protest while taking the Nursing exams of the Galician Health Service (Sergas). The union ‘Enfermeiras Eventuais en Loita’ did so “as a sign of mourning and struggle” for their rights during the exams to make visible their demand for more stable places. More than 10,000 candidates participated in the protest.

On October 7, militants from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) killed nearly 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped another 240. The Gaza authorities, controlled by the Islamist group, have so far reported more than 18,400 dead and 50,000 injured. by the military offensive launched by Israel. We ended the year with another death, that of the actress and singer Concha Velasco. In the photograph, director José Sacristán, a friend of the actress, appears inside the funeral chapel. The new Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, has announced that the world of cinema will pay tribute to Concha Velasco at the next Goya Awards gala, which will be held in February in Valladolid, the artist’s city.
