US predicts possible Chinese arms supply to Russia would prolong war in Ukraine

MADRID, 1 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States has predicted on Tuesday that the possible Chinese supply of arms to Russia would prolong the war in Ukraine, urging Beijing to "join the side" of states that respect "the sovereignty of all countries."

This was stated by the Pentagon spokesman, Pat Ryder, assuring that a prolongation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine would lead to "inflicting more death and destruction" on the Ukrainian people, as he declared at a press conference.

"We have been very clear about the possible implications in terms of extending this war and inflicting more death and destruction on the Ukrainian people," Ryder said, saying once again that he has not yet detected China sending lethal aid to Russia.

The US Department of Defense has warned that the US has a wide range of tools and capabilities at its disposal, including economic sanctions, to punish Beijing if it helps Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.

However, before getting to that, Washington has called on the Chinese government to "place itself on the side" of those who want to respect the sovereignty of all countries, and not of those who "seek to eliminate Ukraine as a nation and kill innocent people."

Ryder's statements take place after the Biden Administration has expressed concern about the possibility that the Chinese Executive could authorize the supply of weapons to the Russian Army in the framework of the war against Ukraine.

China has previously criticized the "absolute hypocrisy" of the United States, which while allocating weapons to the conflict in Ukraine, "thus prolonging the fighting and making peace elusive", spreads "false information" about the alleged supply of arms to Russia by the Asian country.

"The United States has been fanning the flame and fueling the fight with more weapons...it has been supplying weapons to one side of the conflict, thus prolonging the fighting and making peace elusive, while spreading false information that China would supply Russia with weapons," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Monday.

In this regard, China's diplomacy urged the United States to "reflect on its behavior" and "take into account what is good for the world and do something that really helps to calm the situation."
