Ukraine - Zelensky warns Macron that trying to talk with Putin will be "useless" and a "waste of time"

MADRID, 20 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has warned his French counterpart that their aspirations to keep the path of dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin open are "useless" and would be a "waste of time".

"It will be a useless dialogue. The truth is that Macron is wasting time. I have come to the conclusion that we are not in a position to change Russia's behavior," the Ukrainian president acknowledged in statements to the Italian newspaper 'Corriere della Sera' '.

Thus, Zelenski has stressed that if Putin has decided to "isolate himself in the dream of rebuilding the old Soviet empire", the rest of the countries can do little to avoid it. "It is up to them (Russia) to cooperate, or not, with the community of nations on the basis of mutual respect," he said.

"When the economic sanctions were imposed, there were those who accused us of isolating Russia, but it was not the truth: it was the decision to launch the war that marginalized Putin", defended President Zelenski, who took the opportunity to remark that, after a year of war, Ukraine is now "stronger".

On the other hand, Zelenski has been asked about the discrepancies in the Italian government, where the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has shown her support for Kiev, although two of her main allies, Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini, do not hide their sympathies. towards Putin.

"It is fundamental for us not to lose the support of Italy and of any other country (...) We believe that maintaining Italian support is essential to guarantee that of other countries and this also applies to the unity of Europe, where Italy has a leading role in the economic, social and political fields", he said.

However, Zelenski has acknowledged that in his future conversation with Meloni he will address this matter, and has ironized that Kiev should perhaps also send gifts to Berlusconi, referring to some audios from the former Italian president in which he acknowledged having received up to twenty bottles of vodka from Putin, among other gifts.

On the other hand, Zelensky has been informed about a recent survey in which it appears that only 50 percent of Italians consider Putin the aggressor in the conflict in Ukraine, results to which the Ukrainian president has responded ensuring that this does not mean that half of the population is pro-Russian.

"I think there is an important part of the population that is indifferent, that fears the war, fears the cost of energy, fears inflation. In short, normal people who do not want problems. My effort is to explain why we defend ourselves, to remember the horrors of the invasion", has settled.
