Ukraine says Wagner Group chief 'bears direct responsibility for thousands of war crimes'

The chief prosecutor stresses that there are ongoing investigations and denounces Moscow's "total support" for Prigozhin

MADRID, 3 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Ukrainian authorities have affirmed this Friday that the owner of the Wagner Group, the Russian oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, is "directly responsible for thousands of war crimes" and have stressed that they are investigating his role in the conflict, unleashed on February 24, 2022 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian attorney general, Andriy Kostin, has indicated in a message on his account on the social network Facebook that "it is time to put an end to the bloody tour of the Russians, who cover up with the name of a famous composer", before claim that Prigozhin "has recruited and trained subordinates for use in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine".

"All this has happened with the full support of the current Russian regime," he said, while recalling that the head of the Wagner Group "openly admits his role in the war in Ukraine and, with the permission of the Kremlin, resolves personnel issues through the recruitment of tens of thousands of prisoners".

Kostin has stated that Prighozin "was convicted of robbery in Russia and today he is a hero" and part of the "criminal elite of a terrorist regime." "Ordinary 'Wagnerians' will not evade responsibility for him either, including those who have fled abroad. Prosecutors have already questioned two fighters who are in the European Union (EU)", he has detailed.

"I am convinced that, together with international partners, we will guarantee a thorough accountability of all criminals who came to our land with weapons in their hands, as well as their employers, who do business with blood. The hammer of the Justice is always stronger than the hammer of anarchy", he stressed.
