UK Government admits Manston migrant detention center operates illegally

The Ministry of the Interior denies responsibility in relation to the overcrowding of thousands of people

MADRID, 3 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The authorities of the United Kingdom have admitted this Thursday that the Manston migrant detention center, in the county of Kent, has been operating illegally, statements that come after all the alarms went off due to the overcrowding suffered by thousands of people in its interior.

The center was created to house a maximum of 1,600 people for periods of only 24 hours while the first procedures to request asylum in the country were carried out. However, the center currently has up to 4,000 migrants who denounce inhumane conditions and have been in the center for weeks.

The Secretary of State for Climate, Graham Stuart, has acknowledged that "nobody feels comfortable" with what has happened and has assured that the Ministry of the Interior is working to solve the situation despite the fact that the Government says it is covering "all basic needs" of migrants in Manston.

Speaking to Sky News television, Stuart has indicated that the asylum system "is overwhelmed" with the large number of arrivals across the English Channel in small boats. "It's not where we want them to be right now, but we have to figure out how to fix it. Thousands of hotel rooms have been made available, but it's unacceptable to the British people and we need to do more to tackle human traffickers to stop what has been turned into an unprecedented migratory wave," he asserted.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman is due to visit Dover this afternoon. Braverman is under strong pressure in the face of criticism leveled against her for allegedly allowing a worsening of the conditions in which migrants find themselves in the center in question.

Braverman has been precisely accused of allowing the situation to spiral out of control after a dozen Manston asylum seekers were left with no place to stay. Her words have also sparked controversy after speaking of an "invasion" of migrants and referring to "Alban criminals."

The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, has condemned these statements and has accused the United Kingdom of "falsely" attacking citizens from the country and pointing them out as the cause of "the crime problems that the United Kingdom has", according to statements collected by the BBC network.

Although he has admitted that the territory "was once a model to follow when it comes to integrating minorities", he has warned that it has now become a "crazy house".
