Trump avoids endorsing McCarthy after Republican chaos in the US House of Representatives

MADRID, 4 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former US President Donald Trump, who supported Kevin McCarthy's candidacy for the presidency of the House of Representatives, has refused to reiterate this support after the chaos experienced on Wednesday's voting day, in which the hard wing of the party distanced itself from the official line.

"Everyone calls me because they want my support, but we'll see what happens," Trump told NBC News. "That's all I can say," added the former president, in an ambiguous position on which McCarthy's team has not ruled.

The official candidate, who aspired to enforce the new Republican majority in the US House of Representatives, has already failed in three votes due to the discontent of a more radical sector united in the Freedom Caucus, closely related precisely to former President Trump.

Some twenty Republicans have supported an alternative candidate, Jim Jordan, which has left McCarthy with 202, ten below even the Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. 218 votes are needed to be elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
