The Wagner Group slows down the recruitment of prisoners to fight in Ukraine, according to British Intelligence

MADRID, 3 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Wagner Group, a network of mercenaries that collaborates in Ukraine with the Russian Armed Forces, has decreased in recent weeks the rate of recruitment of prisoners to join the conflict, according to British military intelligence, which confirms a slowdown in the data releases.

Specifically, if the Russian prison services reported a decrease of 23,000 people in the prison population between September and November, between November and January the figure has risen to around 6,000. UK Intelligence services consider the Wagner Group to play a key role.

London also perceives a lesser dependence of the Russian Armed Forces on the group headed by the oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, as well as "significant tensions" between this firm and the Defense Ministry. In fact, he considers that the "competition between factions of the Russian elite" may be "partly responsible" for the alleged decrease in the recruitment of prisoners.

The Wagner Group has been involved in some of the most significant advances by pro-Moscow forces in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks, even claiming area conquests even before the Russian government publicly confirmed them.
