The US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, confirmed on Thursday that Washington has auditors deployed in kyiv to ensure that the aid and weapons supplied to Ukraine reach their destination and that they are used appropriately.
"We will continue to support the essential reform and anti-corruption measures of the Ukrainian government throughout the country," Nuland said, referring to the recent scandal of possible corruption within the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense related to cost overruns in the acquisition of supplies for the military.
As detailed by the US chain CNN, US auditors are on the Ukrainian ground together with officials from the World Bank and the Deloitte consultancy to ensure that "aid or weapons are not diverted."
This clarification from Nuland comes after members of the Republican Party on Capitol Hill, in view of possible corruption in the Ukrainian government, have opted to further strengthen Washington's supervision of the supplies sent.
US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the shipment of Abrams model main battle tanks for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Germany, for its part, also unlocked the supply of Leopard tanks.
