The US approves a package of arms sales worth nearly 300 million euros to Finland

MADRID, 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The US State Department has approved on Monday a potential sale of a package of arms worth nearly 300 million euros to Finland.

The approval of the proposed sale comes as Finland, which shares a border with Russia, is seeking to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by enhancing the security of a trusted partner, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe," said the Agency for Cooperation on US Defense Security in a statement.

"It is vital to the national interest of the United States to help Finland develop and maintain a strong and prepared self-defense capability," the agency added.

Likewise, the Department of State has assured that this proposal "will not alter the basic military balance in the region", while it has indicated that the sale will improve the capabilities of air and ground weapons.

The US Administration has asserted that Helsinki intends to use the weapons for its fleet of combat aircraft.
