The US appreciates the "persistent" work of Spain after the threats to embassies but avoids assessing the Russian track

MADRID, 24 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The US government has appreciated the "persistent investigation" launched by the Spanish authorities after the packages and threats to authorities and embassies in Madrid, particularly those of Ukraine and the United States, although it has avoided assessing the possible involvement of Russian intelligence services. .

"We do not comment on matters involving intelligence leaks and ongoing investigations," a US State Department spokesperson told Europa Press, in response to an article in 'The New York Times' that identified the far-right Russian Imperial Movement as material perpetrator of sending packages against various targets.

The sources cited by the newspaper, which pointed to information precisely from the United States Intelligence services, explained that the order would come from the Main Directorate of the High General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU).

The US spokesman has condemned any attempt to "harm and intimidate" senior political officials and embassies. Among the objectives of the shipments was also the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

"We take the security of our staff abroad seriously, also at the Madrid Embassy," added the spokesperson, who has opted for collaboration to "find out what happened and prevent similar threats in the future."
