The Taliban resume issuing passports in Afghanistan after a four-month suspension for technical reasons

MADRID, 1 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The authorities established by the Taliban in Afghanistan have announced on Wednesday the resumption of the delivery of passports in the capital, Kabul, and other provinces after a suspension of work for several months due to technical problems.

The spokesman for the General Directorate of Passports, Nurulá Patman, has indicated that the objective is to deliver 5,000 passports per day and has stressed that those who have already submitted the application during this period will have priority.

"Today the process of distributing passports in the country has been resumed, with priority given to those who have already registered and whose documents have been processed," he stressed, as reported by the Afghan television network Ariana.

The distribution process of these documents was suspended more than four months ago, a situation derived in addition to the scarcity of documents for their issuance.

The Taliban restarted the delivery of these documents in December 2021 to allow travel abroad, after taking power in August of that year after the seizure of Kabul after the flight of the then president, Ashraf Ghani.

The fundamentalist group, which has since imposed numerous restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms, has spent months trying to achieve some form of international recognition for its regime and the removal of sanctions imposed against Afghanistan.
