The Pyongyang General Staff gives the order to fire artillery towards the sea in response to military maneuvers by Seoul

MADRID, 6 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The General Staff of the North Korean Army has given the order to open artillery fire towards the Sea of Japan in response to the exercises that South Korea and the United States have carried out this Tuesday near the inter-Korean border.

According to the North Korean Army, multiple artillery shots from various rocket launchers and howitzers were detected in front-line areas around 9:15 a.m. (local time), according to the KCNA agency.

"We have immediately ordered frontline artillery units to fire artillery fire into the sea to issue a strong warning," an anonymous North Korean General Staff spokesman said in a statement, calling on Seoul to stop "immediately" the "provocative" military actions.

North Korea is referring to live-fire drills that took place Tuesday between South Korea and the United States at border units in Cheorwon county, 71 kilometers northeast of Seoul, Yonhap reported.

The North Korean order comes a day after Pyongyang fired about 130 artillery shells into "buffer zones" on the maritime border, all amid rising tensions in recent months.
