The German Army will begin preparations for the transfer to Poland of the Patriot system

BERLIN, Dec. 11 (DPA/EP) -

The German Armed Forces will begin preparations for the transfer to Poland of its Patriot anti-aircraft missile system from Tuesday, as confirmed by security sources quoted by the German news agency DPA.

Shortly after the agreement between the governments of Warsaw and Berlin, a reconnaissance team will travel to Poland with the objective of inspecting the suitable positions for the anti-aircraft defense system, and then they will deploy three military units in that country.

The objective is to protect the critical infrastructures of the eastern flank of NATO, a decision that will materialize after Berlin offered these systems to Warsaw after the impact of a missile in Polish territory in November, an event that resulted in two deaths.

However, there were initially disagreements as Poland suggested that it would be better to hand over the weapon systems to Ukraine, despite the fact that they are part of NATO's integrated air defense, of which Kiev is not a part.

Finally, Poland showed itself willing on Wednesday to accept the shipment of the Patriot air defense system offered by the German Executive. Thus the Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, explained that he has accepted "with disappointment" the German reluctance to locate this system in Ukrainian territory.
