The European Parliament suspends the immunity of two MEPs for Belgium to investigate their ties with 'Qatargate'

The plenary session of the European Parliament has approved this Thursday the suspension of the parliamentary immunity of the socialist MEPs Andrea Cozzolino and Marc Tarabella so that they are tried by the Belgian authorities for their alleged involvement in the plot of bribes paid by Qatar and Morocco to gain influence in the EU institutions.

The vote by show of hands supports separate reports from the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) of the European Parliament that already recommended this Monday to accept the request of the Belgian judicial authorities.

The process that began on January 16 with the formal announcement by the president of the institution, Roberta Metsola, in a previous plenary session, will officially conclude once the lifting of their immunities is communicated to the two affected and to the authorities that they requested.

At the time of the decision, Cozzolino and Tarabella appear as MEPs of the Non-Registered group after their suspension - voluntary in the case of the Italian and forced in the case of the Belgian - from the Social Democratic group in the European Parliament.

Within the framework of this investigation, there are already four defendants who have remained in pretrial detention since the end of December accused of belonging to a criminal organization, corruption and money laundering, including the Vice President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili, who was dismissed from her duties at the institution as a result of his arrest although, like the rest, he maintains his seat.
