A court in Moscow, the Russian capital, has sentenced this Wednesday to eight years in prison ‘in absentia’ the journalist Alexander Nevzorov, described as a “foreign agent” in the country for allegedly spreading “false” information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Nevzorov has been found guilty of deliberately publicly spreading false news “under the guise of true information” about the Russian Army, which is currently deployed in Ukraine for the invasion of the country.
The verdict has been announced by judge Yevgenia Nikolaeva, who has indicated that she has also been prohibited from managing resources over the Internet for four years, according to information from the Interfax news agency.
The Prosecutor’s Office had previously requested nine years in prison in a penal colony for the journalist. However, the defense has insisted that the journalist had obtained the information from reliable and publicly available sources.
His lawyers have indicated that they will appeal the sentence, although Nevzorov is already on the Russian government’s wanted list. The case against him was opened in March 2022 and, just a month later, the Ministry of Justice described him as a “foreign agent”.
