Russia and the UN meet on Monday to negotiate the extension of the agreement to export cereals from Ukraine

MADRID, 9 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Representatives of the Government of Russia and the United Nations will meet next Monday in the Swiss city of Geneva to discuss the possible extension of the agreement to export cereals from Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea, which has allowed the transport of more than 23 million since July 2022. tons of grain.

The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zajarova, has confirmed this meeting, in which representatives of different UN offices linked to this pact will participate. The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has clarified that for now there is no planned contact between the president, Vladimir Putin, and the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, according to official Russian news agencies.

Guterres himself demanded on Wednesday from Kiev the extension of said agreement, which he considers key to guaranteeing food supply and containing prices globally, especially in some of the most impoverished areas of the planet.

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has warned this Thursday that the agreement is only being applied "half", since he considers that the obstacles that limit the export of cereals and fertilizers from Russian territory have not been lifted due to the sanctions imposed as a result of the invasion on Ukraine.

The Government of Turkey, mediator in the pact together with the UN, has confirmed this Thursday that it has contacts with Russian and Ukrainian authorities to be able to go beyond March 18. Defense Minister Hulusi Akar stressed the importance of the commitments signed and recalled that almost 800 ships have been able to leave Ukrainian ports, according to the Anatolia agency.
