Petro, to the president of the Colombian Congress: "There are no negotiations with drug traffickers"

MADRID, 8 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has responded on Tuesday to the request of the president of the Congress, Roy Barreras, to suspend the approaches with those organizations that are linked to drug trafficking, alleging that this situation "damages the noble purpose of 'total peace '".

"Simple: there are no negotiations with drug traffickers. Armed groups without a political origin will negotiate with the Prosecutor's Office," Petro said through his official profile on the social network Twitter.

Barreras defended on Monday that drug traffickers submit to ordinary justice, paying effective jail terms. "There is no way to justify these types of talks," he said before adding that this type of dialogue, whether official or off the record, is not necessary.

The president of the Colombian Congress made these statements after the brother and son of President Gustavo Petro have been accused of receiving bribes in exchange for including criminals in peace processes.

After that, the country's Attorney General's Office announced the opening of an investigation against Nicolás Petro and Juan Fernando Petro Urrego, the president's son and brother, respectively.
