Petro announces the implementation of the agrarian reform in Colombia "in a matter of weeks"

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has indicated that in a matter of weeks the agrarian reform process will begin, peacefully and without dispossessing the indigenous people of their lands.

"Start the agrarian reform, peacefully. That is the challenge. Countries have industrialized where they have distributed the land democratically. That has not been a communist slogan, as they will now say, but to distribute the land democratically to industrialize a country it is the principle of capitalist society," Petro said, according to the W Radio station.

The goal is, as in Japan or South Korea, to buy the land, even at a commercial price. "That State that we have received has, in the short term, in a matter of weeks, to prepare to buy large amounts of fertile land and has to combine this activity with credit from the Agrarian Bank, which must be converted, also quickly , in the first bank in Colombia", he explained.

"Food production and its industrialization cannot be prioritized if there is no financial lever that supports the peasantry," he argued in reference to the Banco Agrario.

He has also defended the purchase of crops so that peasant men and women are not subject to price speculation, but that the State acquires the products and takes them especially to places where there is hunger.

Petro made these statements during the First National Campesino Convention held this Friday at the National University in Bogotá.
