New York and Chicago mayors target Colorado for sending migrants on buses to both cities

The mayors of the cities of New York and Chicago have asked Colorado to stop sending migrants by bus to both cities, amid tension over President Joe Biden's first visit to the US-Mexico border.

The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, and the mayor of Chicago, Lori E. Lightfoot, have affirmed in a joint letter to the Democratic governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, that the state has sent hundreds of migrants to both cities during the month of December, a time when the reception centers were at their limits.

"Although we share the concern of accommodating the avalanche of asylum seekers, overloading other cities is not the solution," the leaders have reported according to the Bloomberg agency.

The road trip from Colorado to New York takes almost 30 hours, while to Chicago it takes 16 hours. A situation that makes the arrival of asylum seekers even more precarious and that has been denounced by charities.

This is not the first time that US governors have been singled out for sending migrants by bus to other regions. At the end of December, the White House accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott of endangering the lives of migrants after chartered buses arrived at the door of the official residence of US Vice President Kamala Harris.

"Governor Abbott has abandoned children on the side of the road in subzero temperatures on Christmas Eve without coordinating with any federal or local authority," criticized a spokesman for the Biden Administration.

These accusations occur at the gates of Joe Biden's first presidential visit to El Paso this Sunday, the border region between the United States and Mexico that represents one of the hot centers of the immigration issue.
