More than 500 migrants have died in Yemen since the outbreak of the war

MADRID, 26 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has warned that a total of 522 migrants have died in Yemen since 2014, the date on which the ongoing conflict broke out in the Middle Eastern country.

This is clear from a report published this week by the organization in which it raises up to 50,000 people who have lost their lives while trying to emigrate to other countries in the last eight years.

Regarding Yemen, most of those 522 documented deaths of migrants who arrived from the Horn of Africa are related to episodes of violence. Most of the deaths were registered last March in a massacre of the Houthis in a detention center in the capital Sana'a.

On previous occasions, the IOM has warned of the worsening humanitarian situation, especially in Marib, the epicenter of the fighting as a result of the offensive launched in February by the Houthis in the province.

Likewise, the agency warned that migrants who are in areas close to the fighting are at greater risk of being detained, being subjected to forced labor and sexual violence due to the upsurge in fighting.

Marib is the epicenter of the conflict in the country after the Houthis launched an offensive against it in February. The province, with significant oil reserves, is also the only bastion in the north of the country of the recognized Executive.

The war in Yemen pits the internationally recognized government, led by Abdo Rabbu Mansur Hadi and supported by an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia, against the Houthis, backed by Iran.

The rebels control the capital other areas in the north and west of the country. The conflict has worsened on several fronts in recent months, despite international mediation efforts, in a war that has caused what is the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
