Members of the Democratic Party urge Biden to seek a diplomatic solution for Ukraine

A group of progressive members of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives urged US President Joe Biden on Monday to continue negotiations with Russia with the aim of finding a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine.

"We urge you to make vigorous diplomatic efforts in support of a negotiated solution and a ceasefire, to enter into direct talks with Russia, to explore the prospects for a new European security agreement acceptable to all parties," reads the letter in which They ask for coordination with the Ukrainian partners to seek a quick end to the conflict.

Some thirty legislators, led by Pramila Jayapal, have written a letter to Biden in which they point out that the interest of Washington and kyiv is to avoid a prolonged conflict, since it would increase the risk of a dangerous escalation.

In this sense, he has asked the US president to advocate for peace, while they have pointed out the threats of nuclear war from the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, as well as the billions of dollars from taxpayers that have gone to the conflict. .

"Given the destruction created by this war for Ukraine and the world, as well as the risk of catastrophic escalation, we also believe that it is in the interest of Ukraine, the United States and the world to avoid a protracted conflict," the letter reads.

The signatories include representatives such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, from New York; Cori Bush of Missouri; Jamaal Bowman (NY); or Mark Pocan (Wisconsin).

Hours after issuing the letter and drawing criticism from other Democrats, Jayapal clarified that the group supports Biden's strategy.

The progressives indicated that they were not backing down on their support for Ukraine, as they appreciated the commitment "to Ukraine's legitimate struggle" and its "support for the self-defense of an independent, sovereign and democratic state", measures that they have recalled that they have been supported by Congress, "including through various appropriations of military, economic, and humanitarian aid."
