Meloni arrives in kyiv to underline Italian support after Berlusconi's latest criticism

MADRID, 21 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, arrived in Kiev on Tuesday to convey in person her government's support for the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, after the last few weeks of controversy over pro-Russian messages from one of the main partners of the Italian coalition, Silvio Berlusconi.

Meloni aspires to "reiterate the position of the Italian government" and see personally "what a people fighting for their freedom needs", as she herself explained when she arrived in the Ukrainian capital, before going to some of the areas where massacres and to see Zelenski in the afternoon.

"It's always different to see it with your own eyes and I think it will help Italians understand," the far-right leader argued, according to the public television network Rai.

Unlike other international leaders, Meloni's first trip to Kiev was already known in advance, anticipated by Zelensky, who made it clear that it would take place before the first anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion, on Friday, February 24.

Meloni has had to come up against the pro-Russian positions of his partners on several occasions, in the last case as a result of statements in which Berlusconi, former prime minister and leader of Forza Italia, blamed Zelenski for the war.
