Iran recalls that the Revolutionary Guard warned Europe of attacks by the Islamic State

MADRID, 21 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian, recalled that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has warned Europe of attacks by the Islamic State jihadite organization, reiterating his criticism of the designation of the guard as a terrorist group by the European Parliament.

This was made known during a telephone conversation with the Swedish Foreign Minister, Tobias Billström, in which he specified that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has helped to destroy the Islamic State, as reported by 'Mehr'.

"Iran's Revolutionary Guard has played a constructive role in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq, Syria and the West Asia region," Amirabdolahian stressed, arguing that by "destroying" the organization it has "saved" European capitals from possible attacks.

In this sense, the head of Iranian diplomacy has strongly criticized the "non-constructive" position of the European Parliament, expressing his hope that relations between Iran and the Union "will continue on a constructive path during the Swedish Presidency of the EU".

The foreign ministers of both countries have exchanged their points of view on issues of bilateral and international interest, highlighting the "historic" relations between the two countries.

For his part, the Swedish Foreign Minister highlighted his country's efforts during the EU Presidency to broaden the dialogues between the European Union and Iran.

He has also stressed that the recent resolution of the European Parliament regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is not binding.

The conversation takes place two days after the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it described the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group for alleged violations of Human Rights during the recent riots in the country.

The measure was approved on Wednesday by almost the entire Eurochamber with 598 votes in favour, 31 abstentions and nine votes against.
