Iran begins construction of its new Khuzestan nuclear power plant after decades of planning

MADRID, 3 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Iranian government is already finalizing preparations to build its new nuclear power plant in the province of Khuzestan, in the southwest of the country, after decades of planning, and which it hopes to have completed by the year 2030.

The head of the Iranian nuclear agency, Mohamed Eslami, has led a delegation to the place where the Darjovein plant will be built, on the border with Iraq, to examine the final preparations for the start of the works, reports the Iranian semi-official agency ISNA.

The reactor will have a capacity of 300 megawatts when they finish some works whose negotiations go back even before the Islamic revolution of 1979. The construction, near the Karun river, was officially announced 14 years ago.

The nuclear power plant will be built exclusively by Iranian companies and the works are expected to be completed within eight years. By then, the project will have cost about 2,000 million euros.

This announcement takes place in the midst of the difficult talks for the return of Iran to the international nuclear agreement signed in 2015.

In October, Iran presented a counter-proposal to the latest text presented by the European Union (EU), which exercises mediation work, to try to reactivate the agreement, although the United States rejected Tehran's demands and affirmed that it was working on a new document to try to reduce the differences.
