Germany qualifies that it is not part of the war in Ukraine after criticism from Russia

BERLIN, 27 Jan. (DPA/EP) -

The German Government has stressed this Friday that it is not a party to the war being waged in Ukraine, after the Russian authorities requested clarifications after some ambiguous statements by the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock.

The controversy dates back to Tuesday, when Baerbock declared at the Council of Europe: "We are fighting a war against Russia, not against each other", when speaking of cohesion between allies on issues such as arms shipments.

The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, asked Germany on Thursday to "clarify" its position regarding the conflict, since she considers that there are "contradictory" positions.

Following this criticism, a spokeswoman for the German government pointed out that "neither NATO nor Germany are belligerent parties in this war of aggression between Russia and Ukraine." "We support Ukraine, but we are not part of the war," she added, even citing considerations contained in International Law.
