Finland differs with Macron and advocates security "guarantees" against and not for Russia

MADRID, 5 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Finnish Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto, has questioned recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who defended the need to offer Russia security "guarantees" while negotiating the end of the war with Ukraine.

"In the current situation, what we need are guarantees specifically against Russia and this applies both to Ukraine and to other countries," the head of Finnish diplomacy assessed this Monday at a press conference, reports the Yle chain.

Haavisto has stressed that Russia is acting against the international political chessboard, invading and attacking Ukraine, but also leading other conflicts in countries like Georgia.

Minister Haavisto's words are in response to an interview last week on French television by President Macron after meeting with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, in Washington, in which he stated that security guarantees should be offered to Russia to encourage to return to the negotiating table with the Ukrainian authorities.
