China withdraws six of its diplomats from the UK after the incident at the Manchester Consulate

MADRID, 14 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of China has removed six diplomats from the United Kingdom following the October incident at the Manchester Consulate, where a group of protesters was attacked during a rally to demand more democracy in Hong Kong.

Consulate personnel then came out to try to disperse the protesters and one of them was even dragged into the diplomatic complex to be attacked. Among the alleged attackers was Consul General Zheng Xiyuan, one of the highest-ranking Chinese diplomats in the UK.

However, Beijing has withdrawn Zhang and five other officials, according to the BBC public broadcaster, which has attributed this departure to an attempt by Beijing to preempt possible reprisals from the British side, especially if the Chinese Embassy did not collaborate in police investigations.

The UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, has, however, been "disappointed" by the fact that none of the six diplomats will now be held accountable for possible abuses. "We will continue both globally and internally to ensure that the rule of law is respected," he said, in a message to the House of Commons.
