Biden calls Rishi Sunak's election as UK prime minister 'pretty amazing'

MADRID, 25 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has described the election of Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom as "quite amazing", while at the same time announcing his intention to continue "the close cooperation" between the two countries after the resignation of Liz Truss.

Biden has underlined the importance of the British prime minister belonging to an ethnic minority at a time when there has been an increase in racial attacks in the country, according to the US president in statements collected by the Bloomberg agency. .

"As my brother would say, 'Look!' (...). A pioneering milestone, and that matters, matters," said the president of the United States during an event held at the White House on the occasion of the Dilawi Hindu festival.

The Biden Administration has shown its willingness to continue its "close relationship" with the United Kingdom, a fact that "will never change," according to White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre.

"The United States and the United Kingdom are strong allies and have an enduring friendship, and that fact will never change. And as such, we know that they will remain reliable partners on a number of issues, including holding Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine," Jean-Pierre has stated in statements to the press.

However, the White House has announced that Biden will not talk to Sunak until he has met with the British head of state, King Charles III, and has been invited to form a new government, as set out in the Washington protocol.

Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak will become Britain's first Hindu leader, as well as the youngest in 200 years and the country's third prime minister in two months.

The deputy for the district of Richmond, in the county of Yorkshire, has quickly managed to garner the endorsement of more than a hundred 'tories' after the withdrawal of Johnson, who has given up the race to lead the formation again. Thus, he has advanced Penny Mordaunt, the other favorite, to become the next Conservative leader and, therefore, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Sunak, who has a profile favorable to the 'establishment', the markets and the 'tory' majority, was already one of the main favorites in July to take office as head of Downing Street during the primaries that were held after the departure of Johnson and who, however, gave Truss the victory.
