Belgrade announces that NATO has rejected its request to deploy the Serbian Army in Kosovo

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced this Sunday that NATO has rejected the request submitted by Belgrade to deploy the Serbian Army and Police in Kosovo in order, according to the Serbian authorities, to protect the civilian population from the persecution of which is being submitted by the Kosovar authorities.

The Serbian government submitted this request on December 15, during the height of the crisis between Pristina and Belgrade, at a time when the Kosovar Serb population had risen on barricades to protest against arrests of members of this community.

President Vucic confirmed this Sunday at a press conference that he had received the response from the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. "In a carefully worded response, they have explained to us that they see no need for Serb security forces to be deployed in Kosovo," the president explained.

For Vucic, who already declared his skepticism at the time of submitting the request, it is a refusal that "everyone knew and expected" despite the fact that he reiterated the validity of the request, as it is protected by resolution 1244 of Nations United, as he has made known in his appearance, picked up by the Serbian public radio television RTS.

The barricades were finally removed last week in a respite from bilateral tensions, which, however, have risen again in recent hours after an individual shot and wounded two young Kosovar Serbs in southern Kosovo on Friday night. In the incident, the authorities have confirmed, a Kosovar security agent would be involved.
