A volcano in El Salvador generates a strong gas explosion after eleven days of activity

MADRID, 27 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Chaparrastique volcano, located in the city of San Miguel, in the eastern part of El Salvador, has emitted a strong explosion of gases after eleven consecutive days of activity, for which the authorities have called not to carry out activities less than two kilometers of the crater.

Since November 15, 174 minor explosions have been recorded in the volcano's crater, an activity described by experts as strombolian and is common according to historical records, but poses a risk to the local population, according to 'El Salvador'.

The Ministry of the Environment has reported that the last explosion occurred at 1:03 a.m. this Saturday, when the expulsion of gases and ash was observed, although the visibility of the area was reduced by the cloudiness generated.

The authorities have asked the population to go out with clothes that do not expose skin, to close doors and windows of homes and to use damp cloths to prevent the entry of particles.

In addition, the use of a mask has been indicated in order to avoid allergies or respiratory problems and it has been requested to avoid, as far as possible, carrying out outdoor activities and protect the eyes.

Civil Protection officers carry out preventive monitoring of the communities closest to the slopes of the volcano such as Placitas, San Jorge and San Rafael Oriente.
