Valencia will offer spaces, events and public infrastructures to "test" innovative products and projects

Sports centers, markets, the 'mascletaes', the Nit del Foc, the Marathon or the fleet of buses will be "testing grounds"

VALENCIA, May 4. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Valencia will be the first European city to set up an urban laboratory, called Sandbox, at the service of companies that want to test innovation products and projects aimed at Europe's Climate Mission. The urban Sandbox, which will be put into operation between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, is an instrument that will help the success of the mission and was presented this Thursday at Las Naves, the innovation center of the Valencia City Council.

A sandbox is a "closed and secure" testing environment where technological innovations can be tested "in a controlled manner" before being commercialized and implemented and where certain standards are exempted to "favor the development of innovation and knowledge". , as indicated by Las Naves in a statement.

The initiative is part of the Missions València 2030 innovation strategy model and the Valencia Urban Strategy. Both contemplate, among other actions, offering the city's innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem spaces, events and infrastructures that facilitate experimenting with innovations aimed at the economic, social and environmental development of the city, as well as the improvement of public services.

Public buildings such as sports centers, markets, Mercavalència, La Farinea, events such as the 'mascletaes', the Nit del Foc or the Marathon, among others, and infrastructures such as the bus fleet, the Smartcity VLCi platform or public buildings may be the field testing of some innovative project.

To regulate the conditions, a preliminary draft of the regulating ordinance of the Urban Sandbox of Valencia has been drawn up, for which a public consultation has been opened until May 29, so that the innovative ecosystem can make its contributions to improve the standard.

From Las Naves they have highlighted that this regulatory initiative of the city "has attracted a lot of attention" at the national and European level for its "innovative character" and for being "the first European city that thinks of an Urban Sandbox oriented to the Climate Mission of Europe". In fact, this Sandbox is scheduled to be put into operation between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

The vice-rector of Sustainable Development of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Débora Domingo-Calabuig, participated in this explanatory conference on the Sandbox; TECH Friendly's Urban Innovation manager, Borja Gómez; the co-founder and general manager of LexLab, Javier Vázquez Matilla; the head of the Valencia City Council's Innovation Service, Fermín Cerezo; the municipal secretary of Area II of the Valencia City Council, José Vicente Ruano; the I D technician of Las Naves Ángel Navarro and the director of Las Naves, Marta Chillarón.

During the event, it was highlighted that it is a "clear and simple" ordinance to facilitate the participation of the ecosystem, that "all projects" that are aligned with the objective of the climate mission of being climate neutral before 2030 will be included in it, that all those projects that are economically viable will be able to choose to carry out their tests in this Sandbox and that they will be exempted from the usual fee given that there is "a public interest in generating improvements for the city and its inhabitants."
