ALICANTE, 14 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Alicante (UA) and 2023 National Research Prize winner Javier García will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of La Rioja (UR). This concession was unanimously approved by the Governing Council of the UR on December 20, 2022.

The appointment will take place this Friday, November 17, at 6:00 p.m., at the Riojaforum, the La Rioja Congress Palace, as indicated by the Alicante academic institution in a statement.

In addition, the UA researcher and current president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) will participate in the IV Science and Innovation Week of La Rioja. This event has an extensive program of activities (conferences, conferences, workshops, shows) around ‘Science for sustainable development’ and will have García present at two events.

Specifically, the first will be at the IES La Laboral, on November 16 at 12:00 p.m., with Secondary Education and Baccalaureate students, in an event titled ‘From La Rioja to the world: meeting with Javier García’.

The researcher and entrepreneur will share with the students his professional career, from his hometown of La Rioja –Villamediana de Iregua– to presiding over one of the largest scientific unions in the world. This path has been “guided by the conviction that science is a key tool to face the great challenges of humanity”, such as diseases, climate change, the fight against inequality or other Sustainable Development Goals.

The second meeting, titled ‘Frontiers of Science’, will be held on November 17 at 12:00 in the Aula Magna of the Quintiliano building of the UR. Some of the prominent scientists who attend, that same day, the ceremony of investiture of the honorary doctor will intervene.

Among them are Nazario Martín, 2020 National Research Prize winner and one of the most cited Spanish scientists in scientific publications; Javier Martínez Moguerza, secretary of the Young Academy of Spain, and Juana Frontela, director of the CEPSA research center. This activity will also feature the participation of Noemí Linares, professor of Inorganic Chemistry and researcher at the UA Molecular Nanotechnology Laboratory directed by Javier García himself.
