The Prosecutor's Office says that the policy of discretionary appointments has boosted female representation in its leadership

It stands out that the percentage of women in managerial positions in the Public Ministry has risen ten points between 2019 and 2022

MADRID, 6 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Prosecutor's Office highlighted this Monday that "the policy of discretionary appointments in recent years has given a great boost to the female representation in management positions", detailing that it has risen ten percentage points in three years to reach 48% in 2022.

As specified in a press release, "of the 124 prosecutors who occupy a head office, 59 women are room prosecutors, senior prosecutors, provincial heads or area heads", 48% compared to 38% in 2019.

The Public Ministry has emphasized that "the percentage of women in these positions has risen 18 points since 2015, when the proportion between men and women who held positions of high representation was 70% men and 30% women."

In this context, it has maintained that "the policy of discretionary appointments in recent years has given a great boost to the representation of women in management positions", indicating that "in 2022, for example, two Chamber prosecutors were appointed in the General Prosecutor's Office of the State; one in the Supreme Court and another, for the first time, as head of the Special Anti-drug Prosecutor's Office".

However, female representation at the top of the Public Ministry continues to be less than the weight that women have in the prosecutor's office, where they are the majority. In this sense, the Prosecutor's Office has specified that, of the 2,704 prosecutors currently in Spain, 65% are women, with Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country and Catalonia, in that order, being the communities where there is a greater female presence.

The Prosecutor's Office has focused on the fact that "in the senior prosecutor's offices, women have almost reached parity: eight women are senior prosecutors (47%) compared to nine men (53%)."

Regarding the heads of the provincial prosecutor's offices, he pointed out that "women represent 43%, while men are 57%, although it should be noted that Madrid and Barcelona, the two provinces with the highest population density, are headed by a woman from the provincial prosecutor's office".

Regarding the area headquarters, "a destination that is generally complex to manage", he pointed out that "it is where the percentage of women is higher than that of men: 63% compared to 37%".
