Marine Sciences, new Unit of the Institute of Oceanography and the UA to promote research

ALICANTE, July 28. (EUROPEAN PRESS) -

This unit, created last June, also represents "recognition of the extensive collaboration" that exists between the organizations and that begins before the IEO joins the CSIC, as reported by the institution of Oceanography this Friday in a statement.

Currently, UA and IEO share projects in various areas of study of marine biology such as fisheries, deep-sea benthic communities of the Mediterranean, marine angiosperm meadows, endangered species and invasive species.

The IEO includes researchers from the Oceanographic Centers of Murcia, Málaga, Cádiz, Madrid and the Balearic Islands, specialized in various disciplines, including fisheries biology, benthic ecosystems, marine ecology, marine angiosperms, ecotoxicology, marine pollution, geology and sedimentology.

For their part, the UA researchers who are part of the recent CSIC Associated Unit are specialists in fisheries biology, benthic ecosystems, marine ecology and impacts on the marine environment and acoustics.

"The objectives of the new Associated Unit are to optimize existing resources, reinforce the research potential of its members and increase their scientific productivity, as well as achieve new research projects and improve the quality of teaching at the University of Alicante", explain the responsible, the UA professor, José Luis Sánchez Lizaso, and the researcher Elena Guijarro García from the IEO.

The CSIC has recognized an average of 100 units associated with its research institutes and most of them belong to universities. Some of these units have been the seed to create mixed research institutes.
